What is sperm donation?

The process where a man donates his sperm to help a couple conceive is known as sperm donation. Intrauterine injection(IUI) can be used to insert the donated sperm in the female’s reproductive system or the sperm can be used to fertilize the eggs in a laboratory using IVF or ICSI.

Screening tests done for sperm donors

  • Medical and family histories of all donors are thoroughly checked to minimize the risk of any inherited disorder.
  • Infectious diseases such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, HIV and Syphilis.
  • All donors are tested for cytomegalovirus (CMV), blood group and certain genetic diseases like thalassemia or sickle cell disease.
  • After the sperm is collected it is quarantined for six months and the donors have to do the tests again after that time because some diseases like HIV can take up to six months before they show up in a blood test.

Sperm donation FAQs

Both the recipient and her partner should be evaluated before starting the treatment. This is important to reduce any adverse health effects to the recipient as well as the baby. The recipient and her partner have to be tested for infectious diseases so that there aren’t any legal or medical concerns that may arise during or after the treatment. Screening tests are done for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Gonorrhoea, Chlamydia, Syphilis and HIV.

Based on the country where the treatment takes place, the sperm bank can offer the recipient identifying or non- identifying information of the donor in case of an unknown donor. This information is supplied by the donor including physical characteristics, education, career, ethnicity and blood group.

Artificial insemination or IVF is used to fertilize the eggs with donor sperm. The sperm is injected directly into the uterus by Intrauterine Insemination(IUI) during or around the time of ovulation. This treatment can be done with the help of a low dose of hormones in a stimulated menstrual cycle or in a natural menstrual cycle. The process of IVF with donor sperm is carried out by inseminating the eggs with the sperm in a laboratory. The embryo(s) formed as a result is then transferred to the uterus.

Various factors affect the success rates of sperm donation. Some of these are quality of eggs, quality of sperm, the donor’s age and the recipient’s obstetric, medical and fertility histories as well as the fertility potential which is evaluated through a series of tests done before starting the sperm donation treatment.
